Kwen Tomasino: Lessons In Cleanliness, Smiles For The Future

Clark Dominic Alipasa

KwenTomasino: Lessons in Cleanliness, Smiles for the Future is a university-led community development and extension program implemented by the University of Santo Tomas through the Simbahayan Community Development Office, in collaboration with the Department of English – Purposive Communication and the Ministry of Urban Poor – Diocese of Caloocan. The program responds to persistent issues of low literacy levels and inadequate hygiene practices among children in urban poor communities. By integrating interactive storytelling, dramatization, games, and creative workshops, the project delivers literacy and hygiene education in an engaging, age-appropriate, and culturally sensitive manner. Anchored on experiential learning and community partnership, KwenTomasino aims to develop children’s reading comprehension, promote proper hygiene habits, and cultivate positive attitudes toward learning and self-care. Ultimately, the program contributes to the holistic development of children while strengthening university–community engagement.
