Education in the time of COVID19 – Phase 1 Activity

Discussion Questions – Phase 1 

We will discuss the following questions over Facebook and other Social Media over the next three weeks. If you are not on social media, please send us your responses, either in a written format or as an audio/video recording, via e-mail: mona.mamac @ flcgroup.net.

Question 1:

Here’s a link to a resource designed to educate people about being able to identify fake news. Have a look at this and respond to the following questions:

Is it accessible to a person with low/no literacy?

How else could one develop material to help people learn how to identify fake news?

What material can one develop to help people identify fake news regarding Corona virus?

Question 2:

In this chapter, I have introduced four interrelated definitions of ‘language’. How do these definitions relate to or contribute to your understanding of ‘language’?

Question 3:

Can you share some examples of fake news? Do you see any patterns/features that can be used to identify such news? If so, what are these?

Question 4:

Can you share some online/social-media resources that are designed to educate people to identify fake news? What are some of the features of this material?

Question 5:

Explore academic literature/research on the language and features of fake news. What are some of the main points raised in this literature? How does this literature relate to your own (and your colleagues/students) exploration of fake news? Are there any points/issues in the literature that should be shared with a broader audience? If so, what?

Question 6:

What material can you create to make people realise that they need to pay attention to the credibility and reliability of what they consume on social media and the internet?
